Do It Yourself
Move Comparison Sheet
Orchestrating a self-move is a daunting challenge when you take the time to consider all of the things that must be completed to perform the transfer of your belongings. As you plan for the move your “To-Do” list may include:
- Selecting a convenient date
- Securing the right size truck & moving equipment
- Finding enough helpers
- Proper disassembly and reassembly of large items
And once you become familiar with all of these “pre-move” action items … a tiny thought may be generated in the back of your mind … There is a whole lot more to a move than initially anticipated.
The most common factor that influences one’s decision to perform a self-move is: cost. There is a widespread misconception that it will be cheaper to perform the move on your own. A lot of times this is not true.
Many people don’t think about the possible scenarios that could make one regret the decision to perform a DIY move. These scenarios might include:
- A helper getting injured during move while carrying the mammoth armoire down the stairs
- The surprise of turning on a cherished TV only to discover it does not work and conclude it must have happened in transit. The cost to replace this item will come out of your pocket.
If any of these circumstances were to occur, the associated cost would dramatically elevate your moving expenses. While initially it may be more appealing to save a buck or two on a self-move, if you closely investigate all of the intangibles that a professional mover offers … you may come to the same conclusion that thousands of others in your position have come to … It makes sense to hire a professional moving company.
